Description

More than two dozen fun and challenging projects using the next generation of LEGO® Mindstorms™ and the Java™ programming language are included in this guide. LEGO Mindstorms NXT 2.0 is an incredible updated kit for building and programming robots and this book introduces a diverse set of projects, building tips, programming code, complete 3-D rendered building instructions, and hundreds of illustrations to guide engineers and amateurs alike. With easy-to-follow instructions, a full chapter on building with the LEGO stud-less brick paradigm, and a complete tutorial on programming Java, this guide has been revised for the latest version of leJOS NXJ and provides more exciting projects that include Bluetooth, navigation, and integration with new devices such as smart phones and game controllers. The projects include a walking robot, a laser sensor, beacon navigation, WiFi control, precise robotic arm control with a SCARA robot and omni-wheels.

Had high hopes. Wanted to use as father - son activity. I am somewhat knowledgeable in Java and in writing Android apps. Chapter 3 has the instructions of setting up the IDE using Eclipse and the leJOS NXJ java virtual machine for the NXT. I am familiar with Eclipse, so that part was ok, but setting up the USB driver and the getting the leJOS NXJ firmware into the NXT was difficult. The guide did not work for me. I got it to work with much googling and tenacity. I found the projects disappointing; many needed additional Lego modules not included with the standard Mindstorm NXT2.0 kit. I found the PVR robot disappointing, because the code actually executed on a PC and send Bluetooth commands to the NXT. The project to actually remote control something running the code on the NXT make use of an impossible to find iControlPad gamecontroller and a nonexistent ICP API.
