This collects three more adventures with Liv Chenka (Nicola Walker) on her home planet of Kaldor during the events of Doom Coalition 2.The Robots of War finds Liv conducting medical exams at a military training facility where robots are assisting with the training and are key to carrying it out. However, a minor act of sabotage leads to a lockdown and Liv and Tula find themselves in a deadly situation as the robots decide they have to protect the base's commander even if everyone else on the base must die.In many ways, this is a routine tale that draws a lot from Robots of Death with our heroes having to deal with killer robots. It's not as innovative in that regards as the last couple of stories in Series 1. However, what it lacks in originality of concept, it makes up in its mix of suspense and action. This moves a great pace and there are a few surprises, as well as a few dangling plot points which may pay off in later episodes.Overall, a traditional Robot's gone story story, but a well-crafted one.In Toos and Poul, a prospector visits the area where Poul (the late David Collings) from the Robots of Death is "enjoying" retirement as an irritable robophobic hermit. However, he finds the prospector dead and the prospector's robot standing over the corpse. When his old shipmate Toos (Pamela Salem) arrives, he agrees to step back into his role of investigator to find out who killed the prospector.I enjoyed the world building in this episode as we get to see a little bit of what Kaldor is like behind Kaldor City and we learn that in country, there's a very different relationship to robots and we get an explanation for that which makes a lot of sense, and it helps to build atmosphere. The mystery is fine, although I think the solution was somewhat obvious due to the lack of suspects and the guilty party doing a lot to reveal themselves. What does make the episode a winner is the acting and the easy chemistry between Collings and Salem. While it never occurred to me that I'd want to see Toos and Poul while watching the Robots, they really make this fun, with some great banner and just a very warm performance. Overall, this Liv-free and Tula-free actually worked rather well.A Super-Voc is believed to be responsible for the deaths of more than 700 people at a research facility. The Super Voc is being placed on trial. When Liv interviews the Robot, who has lost its memory, she believes there's more to the story and decides to defend the robot. This is an interesting take on a legal drama. The world of Kaldor City makes some of the fantastic legal elements of the story a bit more believable (such as Liv obtaining an instant law license overnight.) The investigation is also pretty good. The story is dragged down a bit by the opposing counsel being a bit cartoonish at times. However, the conclusion really does raise the dramatic tension and the stakes for the next two box sets.Overall, this is a really fun listen and does a nice job setting up series 3.
